Pete’s Story

What was life like before training with V&B Athletic?

I was pretty much a wannabe athlete running when it suited and with little direction or structure. I was good at finding excuses to not run but also had the ambition to do it better. A bit of a contrast!

Last year I had major surgery on an ankle and a broken leg as it’s dance partner so prior to training with V&B I had 6 months of near idleness apart from physiotherapy.

What have you achieved?

I think the following note I wrote to my coach at the conclusion of 4 months on the Elevate Program sums it up perfectly.

“Morning Coach. I think today’s run sums up my past 16 weeks. I ran 16.5 on 31 October and timed in at 1.47. Reading my comments I struggled a bit through the last few clicks but got there. This morning I went 1.41 for 17.12k ( I tossed in an extra 1/2 km for good measure) and ran the last k in 5.12 (slight tailwind). I didn’t struggle at all and managed a few air drums to the beat of Led Zep through the 15k marker. No world records looming but to me personally, that’s very satisfying and thank you I think the program is worth its weight in gold and for anyone willing to stick to its structure and go the distance the rewards will fall your way irrespective of age, ability or at what stage of their running journey they’re at. I think now I can say I love running as I look forward to ticking off some long-held targets and conjuring up a few more!”

What are some of the changes you’ve noticed?

Honestly, the biggest change is my attitude to running and how I approach it.

I’m still the novice but I’ve become more disciplined, more organised and certainly more confident in my abilities to tackle the harder stuff. I’ve discovered that extra 20% or 30% I didn’t think I had and I really feel I can tick off some running goals. Physically I’m stronger, lighter and have way more energy than 4 months ago and at age 60 I’ve run a half marathon quicker than 10 years ago.

What is life like now?

Life’s more fun! I eat better, sleep better and certainly run better.

There are now events on my running calendar I couldn’t have dreamed of a short while ago but I’m looking forward to the next phase with enthusiasm.

What do you love most about training with V&B Athletic?

I love the structure, professionalism and results gained. Before you know it the improvement in performance just kind of creeps up on you. My coach listens and encourages and importantly the program actually lets you enjoy it which is the key to improvement.

Over and above all this is the trust that’s grown.

What is your favourite anecdote about training with us?

Pretending I’m DJ and going on a crazy beach run which I loved but during it, I realised I will tick off my first mara, my first Ultra and maybe some other stuff too ….. you do a lot of thinking when you’re running!

What would you say to anyone thinking of training with V&B Athletic?

Get off your butt and do it!

Just talk to the team, discuss what you want to achieve and let them guide you. Trust their processes and knowledge, do the work and enjoy the results.
